It varies by the generation, but usually I go with the water type. They have the fewest weaknesses! Other times I get the grass type, namely in Platinum and in XY (Froakie failed for me).

Fire is a tough type. The only starter Fire types I really love to use are Cyndaquil and Chimchar.
